UNICA message following the Brussels attacks

On 22 March 2016, the city of Brussels was struck by atrocious terrorist attacks at Brussels International Airport and Maalbeek metro station that left more than 30 people dead and hundreds injured.

UNICA President Prof. Luciano Saso, Members of the Steering Committee, and the staff of the UNICA Secretariat are shocked and deeply saddened by these cruel assaults and extend heartfelt condolences to the families, relatives and friends of the victims.

At the same time, we wish to thank all our friends and colleagues from Member Universities and partner organisations who have sent messages expressing care and concern for the staff of the UNICA Brussels-based Secretariat. We would like to confirm that all our staff members are well and were not harmed in the attacks.

These tragic events make it more apparent than ever that the European capitals are becoming acutely vulnerable to terrorist attacks and urge us as Universities from the Capitals of Europe to address the topics of radicalism and terrorism and to intensify our efforts to reinforce the values of peace, democracy, and freedom in Europe and beyond.
