Two weeks of intensive study on the European policy-making process (5 credits)

Summer School on

European Policy-Making

organised by the Institute for European Studies of Vrije Universiteit Brussel, the University of Vienna and the Diplomatic Academy of Vienna

Every year in July, the ULB's Institute for European Studies (IES) joins forces with another member of the UNICA Network - University of Vienna - and the Diplomatic Academy of Vienna to organise the inter-university Summer School on European Policy-making. The intensive two-week programme takes place for one week in Brussels and one week in Vienna.

Packed with lectures, study visits and simulation games, this programme attracts students and young professionals who wish to broaden their knowledge of the European institutions, European law and the European decision-making process in general.

Aside from being a valuable asset in professional life in general, the Summer School has proven to be a great help in preparing for the EU competitions to select future officials. The summer school alumni can be found not only in the European institutions, but also in national administrations, law firms and academia. For the period 2012-2014, the Summer School receives Jean Monnet funding, as recognition of its excellence.

Programme

The first week in Brussels emphasises the various decision-making actors and looks at the implementation process at national level. Lectures cover topics such as: the EU treaties, EU institutions, the decision-making process and policy-making. Study visits are complemented by lectures from senior academics and by high-level officials from the Brussels-based European institutions. The second week takes place in Vienna, where a team of experts offer in-depth knowledge of European policy-making in various fields such as: constitutional and legal issues, European Foreign and Security Policy, and Monetary Policy. The Summer School concludes with two simulation games. Typically, we conduct one in the field of health and safety policy and one in the field of foreign and security policy.
