NOVA University Lisbon joins EUTOPIA, bringing to 36 the number of UNICA members participating in European alliances

Portuguese institution NOVA University Lisbon joined EUTOPIA European University in mid-September in a ceremony in Brussels, representing one more UNICA member integrating the European University Alliances, the EU initiative to build the universities of the future and streghten the European Higher Education area. With this addition, 36 out of the 54 UNICA member Universities are now taking part in European Universities Alliances, which means that 75 per cent of UNICA’s eligible members participate in the initiative.

This expansion reflects the desire of the EUTOPIA universities to broaden, widen, and deepen their efforts to strengthen their complementary capabilities and to offer their students, staff, and research communities a more comprehensive, connected range of international and intercultural opportunities.

EUTOPIA is a challenge-led, student-centred, place-based, inclusive alliance of entrepreneurial, change focused universities, working towards social cohesion by transcending national and educational boundaries to develop innovative pedagogical models, and advancing the exchange of people and ideas. EUTOPIA seeks to address local and global challenges, ultimately contributing to creating a new model for higher education in Europe.

In the words of the Rector of NOVA“Being part of this alliance will bring great opportunities to collaborate with our European partners in order to develop our mission of being a global and civic university. For NOVA this means to be a high international profile, student centred institution, that serves society through knowledge and addresses today’s global and local challenges in innovative and impactful ways.

Alongside NOVA, the Technische Universität Dresden (Germany) and the Ca’Foscari University of Venice (Italy) have also joined EUTOPIA. The three new members join the six founders, which include UNICA members Vrije Universiteit Brussel (Belgium) and the University of Ljubljana (Slovenia).

In June 2019, EUTOPIA was chosen as one of the initial 17 winning alliances of the recent European Universities Initiative competitive call launched by the European Commission.
