Secretary General

Kris Dejonckheere assumed the position of UNICA Secretary General in 2001. As head of the General Secretariat of an international network of 49 universities, she has a profound understanding of the processes taking place in the European Higher Education Area and extensive knowledge of higher education policy consulting, team leadership and management of European projects. Kris represents UNICA at the senior level in contacts with European Union institutions, HE organisations, networks and non-governmental organisations from and outside Europe. Together with the UNICA Board, she develops UNICA strategic and annual work plans and takes a key role in designing programmes and content of UNICA seminars and workshops.

 

For 6 years, Kris was the project coordinator of the Higher Education Reform project, a service contract with the European Commission the main aim of which was the training of Bologna Experts and Higher Education Reform Experts from Tempus Partner Countries. She also coordinated several projects carried out in the framework of Lifelong Learning Programme and three Tempus programmes: PRIUM: Promoting a model of Integrated University in the fYR of Macedonia (completed in 2010), UZDOC: Enhancing the quality of doctoral education at HEIs in Uzbekistan and RUMI: Réseau des universités marocaines pour l'enseignement inclusif - Network of Moroccan Universities for Inclusive Education (both completed in the academic year 2016/2017). Since October 2016, she is the coordinator of Erasmus+ CBHE project: UZDOC: Furthering the quality of doctoral education at HEIs in Uzbekistan

 

Kris holds degrees in Law and Ethics from Ghent University. She spent her early career as Law and Ethics teacher at several HEIs and assumed the role of Political Advisor for University matters to the Flemish Minister for Education. Prior to joining UNICA she held various positions at Vrije Universiteit Brussel and for many years she was responsible for Research and Development, International Relations & Interface with the Industry.

Marta Brelih-Wasowska joined the UNICA office in November 2010. As Project and Communications Officer she is responsible for external and internal communications activities and the content for the UNICA publications, newsletters, and the content management of UNICA websites and portals. Marta coordinates different events and activities organized by the Network in the areas of Research & Development, Policy & Strategy, and University PR & Communication. She also functions as a liaison officer between the UNICA Secretariat and UNICA member universities. Marta has been consortium member of several European projects (LLP, TEMPUS, Erasmus+ KA2) and has supported the preparation of project proposals and bids. In May 2015, she took up the role of Project Officer for the UNICA-led Tempus project UZDOC: Enhancing the quality of doctoral education at Higher Education Institutions in Uzbekistan (completed in November 2016) and is now Project Officer of the follow-up project: UZDOC: Furthering the quality of doctoral education at HEIs in Uzbekistan (Erasmus CBHE).

 

Marta holds an MA in Applied Linguistics (University of Warsaw) and BSc in International Economics (Warsaw School of Economics). She also studied International Administration at Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM) in the framework of the EU-Canada INTERPARSE programme. She also completed courses of the Management programme by Vrije Universiteit Brussel & Solvay Business School. Prior to joining UNICA, she worked as translator and language trainer.

Laura Brossico joined the UNICA Secretariat team in March 2017. As UNICA Assistant, she supports the office in the organisation of meetings and project-related activities and provides assistance to the UNICA President and Secretary General. Laura has previously worked at Sapienza University of Rome and Noopolis Foundation in Rome.
