Meet the Team


Secretary General, Ms Kris DEJONCKHEERE

Kris Dejonckheere assumed the position of UNICA Secretary General in 2001. She has a profound understanding of the processes taking place in the European Higher Education Area and extensive knowledge of higher education policy consulting, team leadership and management of European projects. Kris represents UNICA at the senior level in contacts with European Union institutions, HE organisations, networks and non-governmental organisations from and outside Europe. Together with the UNICA Board, she develops UNICA strategic and annual work plans and takes a key role in designing programmes and content of UNICA seminars and workshops.

For 6 years, Kris was the project coordinator of the Higher Education Reform project, a service contract with the European Commission the main aim of which was the training of Bologna Experts and Higher Education Reform Experts from Tempus Partner Countries. She also coordinated several projects carried out in the framework of Lifelong Learning Programme and 3 Tempus programmes: PRIUM: Promoting a model of Integrated University in the fYR of Macedonia, UZDOC: Enhancing the quality of doctoral education at HEIs in Uzbekistan, and RUMI: Réseau des universités marocaines pour l'enseignement inclusif - Network of Moroccan Universities for Inclusive Education. Since October 2016, she is the coordinator of Erasmus+ CBHE project: UZDOC: Furthering the quality of doctoral education at HEIs in Uzbekistan.

Kris holds degrees in Law and Ethics from Ghent University. She spent her early career as Law and Ethics teacher at several HEIs and assumed the role of Political Advisor for University matters to the Flemish Minister for Education. Prior to joining UNICA she held various positions at Vrije Universiteit Brussel and for many years she was responsible for Research and Development, International Relations & Interface with the Industry.

Project & Communications Officer


Aurelie Duchateau joined the UNICA office in September 2018. She is responsible for the external & internal communication activities and the content for the UNICA social media. Aurelie also coordinates different events and activities organised by the Network in the areas of Doctoral Education, EU Research, Sustainability and University Culture & the City. 

She took up the role as Project Officer of UZDOC 2.0.: Furthering the quality of doctoral education at HEIs in Uzbekistan (Erasmus+ CBHE) and team member of the ACADEMIC REFUGE (Erasmus+ Strategic Partnerships) project.

Aurelie holds an MA in Philosophy (Vrije Universiteit Brussel, Brussels, Belgium) and International Politics (Catholic University Leuven, Leuven, Belgium). From 2008 to 2011, she was a trainee at the UNICA Secretariat. She participated in a Summer School at Tallinn University (2010) and the UNICA Student Conference in Rome (2010).  After conducting field research in the Middle East and an internship at the Belgian Embassy in Australia, she got accepted to the Bernheim European Traineeship programme and worked in Economic Diplomacy as a Policy Advisor in International Trade and as Area Manager Central & Southern Asia.

Laura Brossico joined the UNICA Secretariat team in March 2017. As UNICA Assistant, she supports the office in the organisation of meetings and project-related activities and provides assistance to the UNICA President and Secretary General. Laura has previously worked at Sapienza University of Rome and Noopolis Foundation in Rome.
