University engagement to the European Parliament and the EU: Beyond the 2024 elections

This publication grows out of the conclusions from the inaugural edition of UNICA’s new flagship event, the UNICA Days, and of the need to strengthen the relationship between universities and the EU beyond electoral cycles. From 28 February to 1 March 2024, UNICA organized the UNICA Days, which gathered in Brussels representatives from the network’s member universities, key stakeholders, policymakers, experts, and peer organizations from across the Higher Education sector. The event provided a vibrant platform for collaboration, in-depth discussions, and forward-looking exchanges. With the European Elections just months away, it was fitting that the first edition focused on the crucial intersection of democracy and Higher Education. Under the theme “Navigating the Future: Strengthening Democracy through Education and Research”, participants explored the ways in which universities  foster citizen engagement, inclusivity, and well-informed decision-making.

Besides university activities, active dialogue with the EU institutions should continue throughout the entire parliamentary cycle. To support this ongoing engagement, UNICA is issuing  a handbook designed to help universities navigate and strengthen their connections with the EU during non-election times. This tool aims to ensure that universities continue to influence policies, advocate for education and research, and contribute meaningfully to shaping Europe’s democratic future, regardless of the electoral timeline.
