The crucial role of Social Sciences & Humanities in FP10 – Joint statement by 14 associations representing European R&I
02 December 2024 | From UNICA - From partners - Funding
As the EU gears up for FP10, the next Research & Innovation Framework Programme and successor to Horizon Europe, the integration of Social Sciences and Humanities (SSH) must be prioritized to solidify Europe’s competitive and innovative edge. 14 European associations – including UNICA, – in their capacity as key stakeholders of research and innovation, have joined forces to urge the European Commission, European Parliament and EU Member States to lay the groundwork for a value-driven Europe by endorsing the crucial role of SSH in FP10.
FP10 builds on the progress of Horizon Europe’s Pillar 2, which has already demonstrated a commitment to democratic governance, cultural heritage, and social inclusion. The full potential of SSH, however, lies in its ability to bridge the gap between technological innovation and societal well-being.
Why does SSH matters?
To tackle the major threats and opportunities Europe faces, FP10 must allocate dedicated funding for SSH research. Such investment will enable evidence-based policymaking, foster a deeper understanding of societal dynamics, and support sustainable and inclusive economic growth. Furthermore, SSH plays a pivotal role in integrating ethical considerations into technological advancements, ensuring Europe leads the way in responsible innovation. With the European Union recognized globally for its leadership in SSH research, these disciplines are uniquely positioned to address complex societal challenges, foster inclusive growth, and shape sustainable policies for the future.
What we call for:
A truly interdisciplinary FP10 calls for dedicated funding and strengthened integration of SSH across all pillars of the framework. This means:
- A European funding programme for research and innovation that: (a) places
researchers representing all disciplines at the heart of all aspects of its decision-
making processes; (b) is inclusive of all disciplines; and (c) invests more in SSH
research that encourages innovation, shapes markets and environments for
sustainable transformation and societal well-being. - Strengthening the full integration of SSH disciplines in the implementation of EU
R&I investments. - Dedicated funding for SSH in FP10 to address the major threats and opportunities
of Europe, from innovation to sustainable and inclusive growth.
By embracing an interdisciplinary approach and recognizing SSH as a cornerstone of the EU’s research ecosystem, we can lay the groundwork for a value-driven, innovative Europe that thrives on collaboration, inclusivity, and sustainability.
