Brussels in the European Research Area: presentations & results of the Workshop

On 26 November, a Workshop "Brussels in the European Research Area" was held at Vrije Universiteit Brussel.

The Workshop was first in a series of workshops in the framework of the Brussels in the European Research Area project,

The project focuses on three main research objectives related to the Prospective Research for Brussels (PRFB) call on ‘Evaluation and optimisation of the research and innovation policies of Brussels’ moving beyond mainstream debates on innovation that focus mainly on technological and market-led innovations by proposing a broader perspective of social innovation, specifically innovation of public policies, investigating the European geography of research focusing on the role of the Brussels-Capital Region and in comparison with
other capital regions in Europe, and analysing the multilevel governance of Brussels focusing on the role of research for policy innvoations. Building on the research objectives, the project consists of three main research stages:

  • the position of the Brussels-Capital Region within the European Research Area through a benchmarking exercise.
  • a comparative analysis of the Brussels-Capital Region with other similar city regions in Europe in terms of regional research strategies.
  • the dynamics of research and policy innovation in the Brussels-Capital Region.

The project is conducted by Dr Nicola Francesco Dotti and coordinated by Dr Bas Van Heur (VUB Cosmopolis). The project is supported by the Brussels Studies Institute.
