Professor Tiit Land the New Rector of Tallinn University

Professor Tiit Land was installed as the Rector of Tallinn University on the 11 May 2011.

He took the Rector's Oath of Office before the Senate of Tallinn University and delivered his Inaugural Speech. The President of the Republic of Estonia, Toomas Hendrik Ilves placed the Chain of Office on the new Rector of Tallinn University, Tiit Land.


At the ceremony, the new Rector of the University was greeted by Mr Jaak Aaviksoo, the Minister of Education and Research; His Excellency Mr Jan Palmstierna, the Ambassador of Sweden; Professor Signe Kivi, the Chairman of the Estonian Rectors’ Conference and Mr Argo Ralja, the Chairman of the Tallinn University Student Board.
Tiit Land also introduced the new Rectorate of the University at the ceremony. Eve Eisenschmidt, as Vice-Rector for Development, and Professor Katrin Niglas, as Vice-Rector for Research, were both introduced as new members of the Rectorate while Professor Priit Reiska will continue as the Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs.

Tiit Land is Professor of Chemisty at Tallinn University and was the Director of Tallinn University Institute of Mathematics and Natural Sciences until the beginning of May 2011.

Land defended his doctoral thesis at Stockholm University in the field of neurochemistry and neurotoxicology. He is a former Vice-Dean of Academic Affairs at Stockholm University and has had extensive administrative experience. His research is primarily involved with molecular mechanisms in iron metabolism and inflammatory processes and their role in neurodegeneration, including Alzheimer's disease. He has published numerous scientific articles in international, peer-reviewed publications and has successfully supervised doctoral students. He is an active participant in the administration and popularisation of science.

Tiit Land was elected as the new Rector of Tallinn University by the TU electoral body on February 14th, 2011. His five year term of office commences on May 15th, 2011.
