Rector of Vrije Universiteit Brussel pays official visits to 4 Shanghai universities during the 3rd EU-China DOC Conference

Prof. Paul De Knop – Rector of Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB), the university that coordinates the EU Erasmus Mundus EU-China DOC project, gave an opening and welcome speech at the 3rd EU-China DOC Conference and Workshop held on 14-15 November 2014 at Shanghai Jiaotong University. He highlighted the importance of the quality of doctoral education and the EU-China cooperation in this field.

The 3rd EU-China DOC Conference and Workshop welcomed about 60 participants and experts in doctoral education from the EU, China, and other parts of the world. The Conference featured numerous presentations about the project objectives, European and Chinese doctoral schools case studies and quality assurance systems, and offered an opportunity to discuss the key cooperation issues of VUB with SJTU, including Master and Doctoral Education, joint research, student and faculty mobility, and academic exchanges in various fields.

Apart from visiting the Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU), the host of the 3rd EU-China DOC Conference, the VUB Rector paid official visits to three other Chinese universities in Shanghai: Fudan University, Tongji University, and Shanghai University of Sport (SUS).

At Fudan University, Prof. De Knop met Vice President Prof. dr. LU Fang and discussed bilateral cooperation issues, including the Brussels Academy of China and European Studies (BACES), and other common interests in academic collaboration, such as student mobility, summer schools, research exchange, and joint projects.

Vice President of Tongji University, Prof. dr. Jiang Bo, welcomed VUB Rector at Tongji University. The meeting focused on cooperation in the field of doctoral schools and graduate schools, research on higher education, faculty and student exchange, joint programmes, and possibilities of summer schools and other academic exchange forms.

Prof. De Knop also visited Shanghai University of Sport and discussed bilateral cooperation issues with SUS. SUS staff demonstrated Chinese Martial Arts during the official visit. Chinese Martial Arts is a long-standing cooperation area between VUB and SUS.

The 4th EU-China DOC Conference and Workshop on ‘Doctoral training and high quality of doctoral supervision, criteria of good promotership’ will be held on 4-5 May 2015 at the University of Vienna.
