Tenured position (assistant/associate professor level) in Economic Geography at the Department of Geography, Vrije Universiteit Brussel, Brussels, Belgium

 

A tenured full-time position in economic geography is available in Brussels to begin October 2012. The selected candidate will contribute to teaching in social and economic geography both at BA and MA levels. At MA level the courses focus on urban geography. She/he will also be partner in new curricula development in collaboration with existing programmes.

 

The successful candidate will take up a leading position in the activities of the research group COSMOPOLIS, City, Culture & Society, and will develop new research initiatives within that framework. Research in the COSMOPOLIS group is broadly focused on urban social, economic and cultural change in the context of globalisation, urbanisation and rescaling. The COSMOPOLIS research agenda combines fundamental research with consultancy and research by design.

 

The selected candidate is expected to initiate and lead research projects and to supervise MSc and PhD projects within the Department of Geography. She/he will also actively participate in management activities of the department and will take part in consultancy activities and science popularization.

 

Job requirements

 

A completed PhD in a relevant field is required and substantial international postdoctoral experience is preferred. The candidate should have excellent teaching skills and should be able to motivate students. She/he speaks English and Dutch, or has a willingness to learn Dutch. Also, knowledge of French is preferred. Female candidates are particularly encouraged to apply.

 

The applicant should have a strong research record in social and economic geography and is expected to be involved in international networks. She/he has the capacity to define new research strategies and provide innovative leadership.

 

Preference will be given to candidates with a background in economic geography, strong quantitative skills, and an interest in spatial analysis and spatial modelling approaches. The selected candidate will be encouraged to interact with other research groups within and outside the department and the university, in the framework of existing collaboration agreements such as the Urban Studies Network and/or the Brussels Studies Institute, or in the context of new collaboration initiatives.
